Knowing The Word in Genesis 1:3-5, The First Day of Creation

3 And God said [the first of ten creative words], “Let there be light,” and there was light. [God speaks and it is done. Light manifests divine intervention in a world which, without it, is darkness and chaos.] 4 And God saw that the light was good [light was good, not darkness]. [That light is good is a reflection of the goodness of God. Elsewhere we see that light reflects the character of God, especially in Jesus, who is “the Light of the World.”] And God separated [the idea of separation, distinctiveness, election, and holiness run throughout God’s word] the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. [Naming something is to assert sovereignty over it.] And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. [The Jewish idea is that the day begins at sunset not sunrise. Here we see the seven-fold creative formula: 1) announcement (“God said”), 2) command (“let there be”), 3) fulfillment (“and there was”), 4) execution (“light”), 5) approval (“saw that the light was good”), 6) a subsequent word (“God called”), and 7) day number (“the first day”). This formula will be repeated on the other days of creation with modifications.]
