31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ [See Deuteronomy 24:1-4. This passage was used by Jesus’ contemporaries for a husband to divorce his wife, not vice versa.] 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality [adultery automatically annuls a marriage by creating a new sexual union in its place (see Genesis 2:24), the penalty for which was death], makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. [The blame is placed on the man.]
