Knowing The Word in Luke 22:63-65, Jesus is Mocked

The mocking of Jesus contrasts with Peter’s betrayal. His abuse of his loyal relationship to Jesus is a different kind of betrayal against the Son of God. While he awaited his “formal” trial in front of the Sanhedrin, Jesus was left with a group of soldiers. They had gathered he was a prophet, so they blindfolded and mocked him, adding insult to their violence. Blasphemy means speaking sacrilegiously against God. If it had been a criminal in Jerusalem these soldiers abused, it would not be blasphemy. However, these are not ordinary soldiers. These are the soldiers directly under the control of the Sanhedrin. These are deep and dark sins being committed against God himself by his own creatures, his chosen people.
Luke 22:63-65
63 Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” 65 And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you experienced in person torture and death as a prisoner of conscience. You were beaten and flogged and sentenced to an agonizing death though you had done no wrong. Be now with prisoners of conscience throughout the world. Be with them in their fear and loneliness, in the agony of physical and mental torture, and in the face of execution and death. Stretch out your hands in power to break their chains. Be merciful to the oppressor and the torturer and place a new heart within them. Forgive all injustice in our lives and transform us to be instruments of your peace, for by your wounds we are healed.
