New and Old Treasures

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” [Earlier the disciples had asked Jesus for an explanation to his parables. Now he asks if they have learned and understand.] 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven [these scribes are his trained disciples, not the Jewish scribes who are outside the kingdom] is like a master of a house [Jesus is not merely describing them but challenging to a new role], who brings out of his treasure [the teachings of Jesus, which they bring out by teaching others] what is new and what is old.” [Jesus is probably taking a dig at the scribes who know nothing new. It also refers back to verse 35 that establishes Jesus’ teaching goes back to the foundation of the world. Jesus’ teaching is new and revolutionary, yet it is grounded in the eternal truth of God and is now being brought into the light.]
