Knowing The Word in Philippians 3:17-21, Imitate Me

17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. [Christianity is not a written code of ethical teachings to be followed that dictate every decision and move we make in life—we call that “moral deism”—but it is a life that looks toward Jesus, imitating his life. It is to this kind of life, Paul’s own life, when he points to himself as an example for other to follow.] 18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. [Paul is most likely referring to Jewish Christians who see Jesus as the Messiah yet remain adherents to the law as a means of salvation.] 19 Their end is destruction [because they cut themselves off from their only hope], their god is their belly [referring to the food laws], and they glory in their shame [circumcision?], with minds set on earthly things [rituals instead of the gospel]. 20 But our [not their] citizenship is in heaven [while our home is in heaven we on earth are a heavenly colony of expats], and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. [Paul rarely uses the word “Savior” for Jesus. It could be because Greek gods were called saviors as was Caesar. What Paul may be alluding to is a rejection of Caesar as Savior in this Roman colony and pointing to Jesus as the exclusive Savior. The purpose of his saving us (again) is to receive resurrection bodies like his. We shall bear the image of Christ in his glorious body.]

Prayer

The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
