Knowing The Word in Philippians 2:12-18, Lights in the World

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. [The first verses on chapter 2 about Jesus had two primary thoughts: Jesus’ obedience to the Father and receiving the title “Lord.” The Philippians, who have God working in them and don’t need to do this from human effort, are to continue in their obedience to the gospel, working out their salvation in a full, redemptive sense. We call this the sanctification of the believer. God works in us to do this work for his pleasure, which should elicit awe and reverence in us rather than panic and alarm.]
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing [don’t imitate the ancient Israelites], 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world [Christians bear witness to the Light of the World], 16 holding fast to the word of life [both the gospel and its ethical teachings], so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. [Paul’s pride will be their growth rather than his own.] 17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering [his possible and probable martyrdom] upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. [Verses 17-18 speak of the underlying joy Christians are to have together, even in the midst of suffering. Hence the repeated prayer below.]
Prayer
The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
