1 Paul and Timothy [one of 6 letters in which Timothy is mentioned in the greeting], servants of Christ Jesus [servants or “slaves” refers to those owned by and subservient to, the master of a household],
To all the saints [Greek translation of OT Hebrew “servant of Yahweh” first found in Exodus 19:6 as “a holy nation” but most likely derived from Daniel 7:18’s end time vision] in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: [These terms refer to people who are part of the community and not single leaders of the church. Paul is most likely considered the single leader, if anyone is. Overseers and deacons refer to people who function in these ways rather than hold an office. Overseer derives from a verb whose primary meaning is to “visit” in the sense of “looking after and caring for” someone. Deacon means “servant” and is used by Paul to designate those who serve others. Paul probably uses these terms here to anticipate naming Euodia and Syntyche in 4:2-3, who are not in accord with one another.]
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. [Grace is connected with the Father and peace with Jesus. Why do you think this is?]
Prayer
The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
