11 I have been a fool! You forced me to it, for I ought to have been commended by you. For I was not at all inferior to these super-apostles, even though I am nothing. 12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works. 13 For in what were you less favored than the rest of the churches, except that I myself did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong!
Paul brings his foolish section to an end with one last shot at the Corinthians, who did not commend him, and then returns to normal arguments. He talks about the true marks of an apostle that are seen in mighty works and miracles, not eloquent speech, and reminds them he took no pay. He cost them nothing.
I know what must be done. Only now am I beginning to be a disciple. May nothing of powers visible or invisible prevent me, that I may attain unto Jesus Christ. Come fire and cross and grapplings with wild beasts, the rending of my bones and body, come all the torments of the wicked one upon me. Only let it be mine to attain unto Jesus Christ.
Ignatius of Antioch, c. 35-107
