31 And he began to teach them [the start of this new phase in Mark] that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes [these are the three groups that make up the Sanhedrin, the highest court in Israel] and be killed, and after three days rise again [passive tense verbs, meaning it will be done to him by others and then by God]. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him [gave him a stern warning, a talking to]. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples [what he will say is not only to Peter but for the other disciples as well], he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” [As Peter’s former pronouncement was inspired by God, this one is from Satan. Peter is being cast in Satan’s role as the tempter. His mind is yet to be transformed.]
