Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there [this verse concludes a major section of teaching and transitions into a new section that describes the division around his teaching centered around this question: Who is Jesus?], 54 and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue [Jesus’ last recorded visit to a synagogue], so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? [“Wisdom” and “mighty works” require more than human origin.] 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? [Mark calls Jesus a carpenter while Matthew tells us that Joseph was. We can thus conclude that Jesus was part of a family business.] Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James [leader in the church (Galatians 1:19)] and Joseph and Simon and Judas [author of the letter as a brother of James (Jude 1)]? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” [If something or someone seems too good, it/he must be fake.] 57 And they took offense [the opposite of faith] at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” [This is one of the reasons used about why I could not return to San Antonio to do ministry!] 58 And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief. [Where do we see miracles today? Where there is faith or where there is offense?]
