The Twelve Apostles
1 And he called to him his twelve disciples [a response to the need for workers; see 19:28; the true people of God] and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. [Jesus gives them authority for mission, not institutional authority.] 2 The names of the twelve apostles [one who is sent] are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew [Nathanael?]; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus [Judas the son of James in Luke and John?]; 4 Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot [could mean traitor or the name of a southern city in Judea], who betrayed him.
