Retaliation

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ [This is the principle of proportionate retribution. By Jesus’ day physical punishment had been replaced with financial damages.] 39 But I say to you, Do not resist [even accept ill treatment] the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. [This is insult rather than physical violence.] 40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. [Have a willingness to forego your personal rights and allow yourself to be insulted and imposed upon.] 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. [The Romans would commander people to carry things as common laborers.] 42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. [The principle here is that the needs of others comes before my convenience.]
