Knowing The Word in Luke 22:35-38, Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

Jesus reminds the disciples of the “good old days” when God took care of them. But now the wind is shifting, and a storm is coming. Jesus quotes Isaiah 53:12 to explain his death as substitutionary. He will take the place of the sinful people. He knows his disciples will be in danger as well, but they do not understand what he says. They take Jesus literally and produce weapons. Jesus immediately dismisses their idea—enough!

Luke 22:35-38

35 And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.”

Prayer

Grant, O God, that we may keep a constant guard upon our thoughts and passions, that they may never lead us into sin; that we may live in perfect charity with all mankind, in affection to those that love us, and in forgiveness of those, if any there are, that hate us. Give us good and virtuous friends. In the name of our blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Warren Hastings, 1732-1818
