The Son of God makes his first trip to the Temple, the place where God meets his people in sacrificial rites and through his presence in the Holy of Holies. One would expect a greater sacrifice for Jesus; however, the sacrifice Joseph and Mary offer indicates they are poor and of modest means, not even being able to afford a lamb for the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, will you help me to be content in this life knowing you and the people you put in my life and keep me from running after wealth as a replacement for you and them? Amen.
