Knowing The Word in 2 Corinthians 7:1, These Promises

1 Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

The promises are from the Old Testament quotes we read yesterday. The Corinthians could have become defiled by being involved in pagan temple rituals in Corinth. They are to get on with progressive sanctification, turning their backs on past practices. Paul is helping them to establish the proper moral and social boundaries for their Christian community in the heart of their pagan city.

Grant Lord, that I may not, for one moment, admit willingly into my soul any thought contrary to your love and will for my life. Help me to be a master of myself, that I can be the servant of others.
