Knowing The Word in Acts: The Fellowship of the Believers: Acts 2:42-44

The last verses of Acts 2 give us a vision of a Christian community that shares life together. These are the marks of the early Church community: the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, Holy Communion and fellowship meals, prayer, signs and wonders of the miraculous, care for the poor, praise, and a winsome disposition that attracts others. Consider if this describes you and your church community. What can you do to make your church more like the one described in these verses?

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Prayer: Almighty God, we thank you for having renewed your Church, at various times and in various ways, by rekindling the fire of love for you through the work of your Holy Spirit. Rekindle your love in our hearts and renew us to fulfill the Great Commission which your Son committed to us; so that, individually and collectively, as members of your Church we may help many to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Empower us by your Spirit to share, with our neighbors and friends, our human stories in the context of your divine story; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
