8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. [Take into account and reflect upon and then allow these things to shape your conduct. It is commonly known that a practice of active gratitude moves people from focusing on negative things in life to the positive things in life. Ultimately, Paul is telling us to focus on Jesus because he is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of our praise.] 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. [Before jumping to the conclusion that an egotistic Paul appears at the height of presumption, we need to remember that the New Testament does not exist at this point. The tradition they have learned, received, heard, and seen as the standard of Christian belief and behavior, was embodied in the teaching and example of those early Christians in whose lives the authority and ethical practice of Jesus was to be found. Paul is their “book” on Jesus because not all of the four gospels have been written and made available.]
Prayer
The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
