9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. [Unlike the works of the first two days, the work of day three involved no new creation, but more of a reorganization of existing material. Where we understand the continents as islands surrounded by oceans, the phraseology of “one place” suggests the writer of Genesis saw the world as dry land with seas in it. In the flood, the boundaries established by God at creation are removed, the seas were “un-gathered,” and death and chaos returned.]
